March is Women's History Month, a time to recognize the women whose leadership, vision, and determination have helped shape our communities and our economies. In Puerto Rico, women have long played an essential role in building industries, strengthening institutions, and driving innovation. Today, their impact continues to grow as they help lead the island into a new chapter of economic development.

Across Puerto Rico's economy, women are entrepreneurs, executives, scientists, engineers, educators, and public servants. They are founding companies, leading organizations, advancing research, and mentoring the next generation of leaders. Their contributions extend far beyond individual success stories; they are helping build a more resilient, diverse, and competitive economy for the island.

Puerto Rico’s talent pipeline reflects this strength. Women make up approximately 54% of the population and earn the majority of university degrees, accounting for nearly 60% of degrees conferred. That academic leadership is one of Puerto Rico’s most powerful assets: a deep bench of skilled, prepared professionals ready to contribute across sectors that are shaping the future of the global economy.

Progress is also visible in the private sector. Reports indicate that in 2025, 44% of companies in Puerto Rico have reached gender parity, while 56% are actively working to close gaps. These shifts reflect a growing recognition that inclusive leadership and equitable opportunities are not only social priorities but also economic ones.

Historically, decisions shaping economic policy, investment attraction, and industrial growth have often been made in spaces where women were underrepresented. While progress has been made, Puerto Rico still has a meaningful opportunity to ensure women can fully participate and lead, especially in roles and industries that drive growth and long-term competitiveness.

Economic development, in particular, benefits from diverse perspectives and inclusive leadership. The decisions that shape a jurisdiction's economic future, where companies invest, which industries grow, and how talent is cultivated, require a deep understanding of communities, collaboration across sectors, and long-term vision. Women bring these qualities to the forefront of economic development efforts, helping ensure that growth is both sustainable and inclusive.

At Invest Puerto Rico, we see this impact firsthand. 60% of our workforce is composed of women, many of whom play critical roles in shaping the strategies that position Puerto Rico as a competitive destination for global investment. From research and strategy to marketing, business development, and operations, women across our organization contribute daily to attracting companies, supporting entrepreneurs, and strengthening the island’s economic ecosystem.

Their work supports a broader effort to position Puerto Rico as a hub for industries such as biosciences, technology, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing. As these industries grow, so too does the opportunity for women to lead and participate at every level of the economy, particularly in roles that will define Puerto Rico's long-term competitiveness. In a global economy where competitiveness depends on talent and creativity, empowering women to lead is one of the smartest investments any society can make. This Women's History Month is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of those who paved the way, and to recognize the many women who continue to shape Puerto Rico's economic future every day. Their leadership is not just part of our history; it is essential to what comes next.
